The Library truly is at the heart of Lela Alston School! Located in the center of the building, our Library is home to over 10,000 books, magazines, and movies, as well as 21 computers in our mini lab.
Library & Technology Curriculum
Mrs. Gaviña, our Teacher-Librarian, is excited to integrate literacy and technology skills. Library lessons range from parts of a book to research for our kindergarten to third grade students. And of course, it is a goal to have all Alston Angels become life-long readers! As for computer lessons, from mouse basics to Power Point presentations, the students are sure to learn 21 st Century skills while having fun.
Aside from the weekly Library & Computer classes, Library programs include:
- Open Library mornings (from October to April, the cooler months)
- Family Library Nights (monthly)
- 2 Scholastic Book Fairs – the Fall one is for profit; the Spring one is “buy one, get one free”
- First Grade field trip to the Palo Verde Public Library (in the Spring)
- Read Across America (on March 2 nd to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday)
- Voting for Grand Canyon Reader Award
- Author visits – Conrad Storad (2004), Barbara Gowan (2005), Mike Thaler (coming October 31, 2007!)
- and MORE funbrary activities planned for this year!
Book Check-Outs
Students check out one book per week during their scheduled Library classes. All Alston Angels should know how to take care of their library books at home. Be responsible… bring your books back on time!
Parents may also borrow books from the Alston Library. Parents may come before school (7:30 to 7:50 am) and borrow up to 5 books per week. Parents may also check books out during our monthly Family Library Nights (up to 5 books).
Come and visit the Alston Library;
Turn the pages of your imagination… READ! |
